Two American Boys With The Dardanelles Battle Fleet
The Dardanelles Battle Fleet was a significant naval force in the early 20th century that played a vital role in World War I. Among the brave men who served in this fleet were two courageous American boys who left behind their comfortable lives to embark on a remarkable adventure filled with danger, heroism, and camaraderie.
Meet Jack and Tom, childhood friends who were inseparable since their early years. Growing up in a small coastal town in America, their fascination with the ocean and tales of great naval battles fueled their dreams of becoming sailors. Little did they know that their aspirations would lead them to the turbulent waters of the Dardanelles in the spring of 1915.
A Journey Across the Atlantic
At the age of 18, Jack and Tom enlisted in the United States Navy, hoping to experience the thrill of the high seas. They went through rigorous training, gaining essential skills and knowledge necessary for a successful military career. As their training drew to a close, news of the conflict at the Dardanelles reached their ears. Sensing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, the two friends volunteered to join the battle fleet destined for the shores of Gallipoli.

Their departure was an emotional affair. Family and friends bid them farewell, praying for their safe return. Jack's mother, with tears streaming down her face, handed him a locket to remind him of home. Tom's father, a veteran of the Spanish-American War, offered words of wisdom and encouragement. The weight of their loved ones' hopes and expectations rested upon their young shoulders as they embarked on their transoceanic journey.
Stormy Seas and New Allies
As they sailed across the Atlantic, Jack and Tom experienced the power of nature's fury. Violent storms and crashing waves tested their resolve and forged their resilience. It was during these tempestuous moments that they formed an unbreakable bond with their fellow comrades, sharing stories, laughter, and hardship that brought them closer together.
Upon reaching their destination, the American boys were confronted with a scene of organized chaos. Ships from various nations clustered together, forming an imposing force. Jack and Tom marveled at the unity they witnessed, as the Allies prepared to launch a fierce assault on the Ottoman Empire's defenses guarding the Dardanelles Strait.
Into the Heart of Battle
The Dardanelles was a treacherous and heavily fortified region, presenting immense challenges to the invading fleet. The American boys found themselves at the forefront of the assault, manning their posts with unwavering determination. Their training kicked in as they fought off enemy fire, their hearts pounding within their chests.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months. The Battle of Gallipoli became a grueling test of endurance and resilience for Jack and Tom. Witnessing the horrors of war firsthand, they also saw the strength and camaraderie that emerged among their fellow sailors. These bonds strengthened their resolve, providing solace and hope amid the chaos.
The Cost of Victory
The Dardanelles Battle Fleet faced numerous setbacks and losses. Jack and Tom witnessed friends and brothers in arms fall in the line of duty. The toll of war was heavy upon their young souls, but their spirits remained unbroken. Amid the devastation, they clung to the belief in a brighter future and the pursuit of victory.
Finally, in early 1916, the Dardanelles Battle Fleet achieved a significant breakthrough. Despite the losses and sacrifices, the Allies emerged victorious, securing a vital strategic position against the Ottoman Empire. Jack and Tom stood side by side, embracing the moment with a mixture of relief, sorrow, and pride in their hearts.
A Homecoming that Transformed Lives
After the battle, Jack and Tom returned to their small coastal town in America. They were hailed as heroes, their tales of bravery and survival inspiring a generation. Jack reunited with his mother, the locket she had given him still around his neck, while Tom's father saluted his son's bravery with utmost pride. The experiences they went through had transformed them in ways unimaginable, shaping their lives and their futures.
Their story, a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the bonds formed in times of hardship, serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless men and women during times of war. Jack and Tom's journey with the Dardanelles Battle Fleet stands as a symbol of bravery, courage, and the enduring power of friendship.
So, next time you find yourself near the coast, take a moment to remember the brave souls who sailed through treacherous waters to defend their country and preserve the values we hold dear. Let their stories echo in the depths of your soul, inspiring you to face your own battles with unwavering determination, just like Jack and Tom did with the Dardanelles Battle Fleet.

Published originally in 1916, this novel written for young adults is the third of a trilogy (the first being Two American Boys with the Allied Armies and the second Two American Boys in the French War Trenches, also ePublished by Travelyn Publishing) about two American boys searching for an estranged brother in war-torn Europe during World War I—the “Great War”—the story in some respects presaging the World War II story Saving Private Ryan. In this case, a Chicago father is grief-stricken at discovering he had years before falsely accused his older son of a crime, causing him to leave home and never come back. The father learns this prodigal son is now fighting with the British somewhere in Europe as an aviator, and the younger son with his cousin is sent across the Atlantic to find and bring home the older brother for a long-overdue reconciliation with his father.
Preparing old books for digital publication is a labor of love at Travelyn Publishing. We hold our digital versions of public domain books up against any others with no fear of the comparison. Our conversion work is meticulous, utilizing a process designed to eliminate errors, maximize reader enjoyment, and recreate as much as possible the atmosphere of the original book even as we are adding the navigation and formatting necessary for a good digital book. While remaining faithful to a writer’s original words, and the spellings and usages of his era, we are not above correcting obvious mistakes. If the printer became distracted after placing an ‘a’ at the end of a line and then placed another ‘a’ at the beginning of the next line (they used to do this stuff by hand you know!),what sort of mindless robots would allow that careless error to be preserved for all eternity in the digital version, too? Not us. That’s why we have the audacity to claim that our re-publications are often better than the originals.
