The Saga of Hrolf Gautreksson is a direct sequel to The Saga of King Gautrek, and opens with the hero of the previous saga in old age, embarking a little unwillingly on a quest for a second wife. The fruits of the ensuing marriage are two sons, Ketil Mite, and his younger, but bigger and more able brother Hrolf, who succeeds his father as king, and is, as the saga informs us more than once, superior to other kings in the Northlands. In a rather defensive, surly epilogue, the author accepts that this is the first time the saga has been written down, but suggests a respectable pedigree with the assertion that the story has been told by many storytellers in the past, and this claim is in fact backed up by the Eddic poem The Lay of Hyndla, where characters from the saga, including Thorir Iron Shield, are mentioned as huscarls of one Hrolf the Old.
The main themes of The Saga of Hrolf Gautreksson are the marriage quest and sworn brotherhood; the quest for suitable females, whose fathers are either inadequate or ogre like, and close male friendships, often between Hrolf and men he has defeated in battle. However, this saga and its prequel, not to mention The Saga of Bosi and Herraud, are chiefly of interest to the English speaking reader because of a connection with the Old English poem Beowulf—the Gauts ruled by the descendants of Gauti son of Odin are, according to most authorities, the same people as Beowulf’s Geats. Despite this, The Saga of Hrolf Gautreksson exists in quite a different milieu from the classic epic poem, one that mingles berserk Viking bloodthirstiness with the courteous world of the medieval knight.
Although it is a sequel to The Saga of King Gautrek, which includes an explicit reference to it (which might suggest that The Saga of Hrolf Gautreksson is an older work) it seems that The Saga of Hrolf Gautreksson was written by another author. Certainly it is in a different style. Gone are the verses from older poetry, and the digressions into the legendary history of Norway. Instead we have long speeches by the characters and a greater interest in the psychological quirks of its hero, alongside action packed voyages that take the hero and his bold companions far and wide across the Viking world, to Russia and the East, and west over sea to Scotland, and later England and Ireland. It also contains numerous anachronistic references to the world of the High Middle Ages; knights and jousting, castle sieges, and similar paraphernalia of medieval romance. Nevertheless, Queen Thornbjorg, the tourneying shield maiden who King Hrolf woos, has more in common with the Icelandic Brynhild than her medieval Austrian counterpart, the Brünhilt of the Nibelungenlied.
