The Saga of Egil Onehand and Asmund Berserkerbane is notable for its sophisticated structure, using frame stories and flashbacks to tell the tales of its two eponymous heroes and the giantess Arinnefja. Like several other sagas, it features its youthful heroes travelling widely across the northern world, including as far as Jotunheim, and encountering a dazzling array of monsters and villains along the way, and one episode in Egil Onehand’s life story bears remarkable similarities with the story of Odysseus and the Cyclops. Asmund Berserkerbane is better known in the sagas as Gnodar-Asmund, who is mentioned in several other sagas, and whose later life, in which he gained his later epithet, is known mainly from brief references at the end of this saga.

The saga also has connections with the lost saga of Starkad the Old, in that Asmund’s son is said to have been the king whose murder was Starkad’s last shameful deed, and yet that seems to be challenged by the first chapter of The Saga of Hromund Gripsson. These endless and often contradictory links with other sagas and tales are as intricate and fascinating as the saga itself, whose structure seems to owe itself to a knowledge of romance literature from the Continent, which would have been available in Iceland at the time of composition—apparently the fourteenth century, although the earliest extant manuscripts are fifteenth century in date. In this, the saga is comparable with many other legendary sagas, combining hoary native tradition at risk of being lost forever with new traditions and techniques and stories from the far off Southlands.
