Few places ignite the fires of travel passion more than Machu Picchu, high in the Peruvian Mountains.

One crucial fact exists that does not get discussed enough. The importance of stone. Simply, and obviously, the citadel would not and could not exist without the ancient Incan architect's mastery of stone.

Stone as a material has for millennia played a significant role in the development of culture and civilisation he world over. Yet, nowhere is that more prevalent than within this most mysterious yet powerful of ancient civilisations, in which the seemingly humble natural material of stone stakes a claim to be not only the physical building block of a culture, but a spiritual and metaphorical building block of an entire civilisation.

This book is a discourse about the role and relevance of stone within Inca culture. It's also a kind of travelogue detailing some of my own experiences exploring this beautiful and fascinating country whilst researching for my degree at university.
Leaning on the works of legendary explorer Hiram Bingham, as well as renowned scholars Gasparini and Margolies, this book is an enjoyable and informative journey around some of the Incas' most famous monuments, which, without their mastery of stone, would never have existed, and likely, nor would the Incas themselves.
