In the annals of history, there are unknown tales that shape the world we live in today. One such story revolves around the origins of America's secret nuclear surveillance system. This clandestine operation, shrouded in mystery, played a pivotal role in global politics and ensured the safety and security of the United States during the tense Cold War era. Let's explore the intriguing beginnings of this remarkable surveillance system that changed the course of history.

A Technology Born Out of Necessity

It all started in the aftermath of World War II when the United States found itself locked in an ideological struggle with the Soviet Union. The threat of nuclear war loomed large, and the need for a reliable surveillance system to monitor the development and testing of nuclear weapons became paramount. This necessity drove American scientists and engineers to develop cutting-edge technology capable of tracking nuclear activity across vast distances.

Enter the Vela Satellites

The Vela satellites, launched in the late 1950s, heralded a new era of surveillance capabilities. These space-borne detectors were specifically designed to detect and analyze the distinct signatures of nuclear explosions. Equipped with advanced sensors and instruments, the Vela satellites could capture and interpret unique gamma-ray and X-ray signals emitted during a nuclear detonation.

These satellites, orbiting high above the Earth's atmosphere, were able to observe the entire globe, providing unparalleled coverage of potential nuclear test sites. The data they gathered provided crucial intelligence to the American government, allowing them to monitor the Soviet Union's nuclear activities with great precision.

The Birth of CORONA: Eye in the Sky

While the Vela satellites focused on detecting nuclear detonations, the need for a system that could keep a close eye on potential missile launch sites became apparent. This led to the creation of the CORONA satellite program. Launched in the early 1960s, CORONA revolutionized reconnaissance by providing high-resolution imagery of Soviet territory from space.

The CORONA satellites were equipped with powerful cameras capable of capturing detailed images from heights of nearly 100 miles above the Earth's surface. These images were then retrieved by American reconnaissance aircraft using specially designed film recovery systems. The photographs provided invaluable intelligence on Soviet missile capabilities and military activities, giving the United States a significant strategic advantage during the Cold War.

Keeping America Safe: The Legacy

The America secret nuclear surveillance system, born out of the need to monitor and counter the Soviet Union's nuclear ambitions, played a crucial role in maintaining peace and stability during the Cold War. The information gathered by the Vela and CORONA satellites provided the United States with a real-time view of nuclear tests and missile deployments, allowing them to respond effectively to any potential threats.

The success of these surveillance programs paved the way for further advancements in satellite technology, expanding the scope of global monitoring and intelligence gathering. Today, satellite surveillance systems play a vital role in various fields, from weather forecasting and environmental monitoring to national security and disaster management.

The Unveiling: Declassification and Public Awareness

The secrecy surrounding the origins and capabilities of America's secret nuclear surveillance system persisted for decades. It wasn't until the declassification of documents and public awareness campaigns that the true extent and significance of these programs began to surface.

Revisiting the origins of America's secret nuclear surveillance system illuminates the remarkable innovation and dedication that drove its development. It serves as a reminder of the lengths nations go to protect their interests and safeguard global security. The legacy of these surveillance systems lives on, continuously evolving to meet the challenges of an ever-changing world.

This is the first description of the formation of America's nulcear surveillance system. Drawing on interviews with participants and the little documentation available under the Freedom of Information Act, Ziegler and Jacobson tell a story not told before. They shed new light on questions raised in earlier interpretations of the early Cold War years and reveal the origins of a surveillance activity that is implied, but not explained, in today's headlines.

This book provides the first documented description of the genesis and institutionalization of America's nuclear surveillance system. It traces the development of covert technical methods for assessing the nuclear capability of foreign powers from the of these techniques in World War II to 1949, when they were successfully employed to detect the test of Russia's first atomic bomb. Ziegler and Jacobson examine the planning for the system as well as the technical and organizational obstacles that had to be overcome before it could be implemented. They describe the government decision-making processes and the ways individuals and groups with different beliefs and interests were mobilized in support of the program. They also explore the relationships between the intelligence and scientific communities that were forged in this process.
