to Pictures From Brueghel
Published in 1962, "Pictures From Brueghel" is a collection of poems that intricately intertwines the visual and textual realms, offering a profound sensory experience. Each poem within the collection is inspired by the vividness and vitality of Flemish painter Pieter Brueghel the Elder's masterpieces.
Brueghel's paintings provide a rich tapestry of life in sixteenth-century Flanders, depicting scenes ranging from landscapes and rural activities to biblical themes and social commentary. One cannot begin to explore "Pictures From Brueghel" without acknowledging the immense power of visual imagination. Williams' poems transport readers into Brueghel's world, inviting them to become active participants in the vivid imagery painted by words.
In the poem "Landscape with the Fall of Icarus," Williams masterfully captures the chaotic scene of people going about their daily lives, completely oblivious to the tragedy unfolding in the background. Through Williams' evocative language, we are not mere observers but individuals immersed in the bustling marketplace and the forthcoming tragedy.
The Essence of Everyday Life
Williams' poetry brilliantly captures the essence of everyday life in Brueghel's paintings, elevating the ordinary to the extraordinary. In the poem "Children's Games," Williams delves into the colorful and playful world of children, infusing the scene with a sense of wonder and innocence:

The poem "The Fall of Adam" delves into the complexities of human nature, touching upon themes of temptation, vulnerability, and the inherent flaws that accompany humanity.
Through Williams' astute observation and introspection, these social themes come to life, reminding us that despite the passage of time, the struggles and triumphs of humanity remain unchanged.

This collection makes available work of one of our greatest American poets in the last decade of his life. The first section, Pictures from Brueghel, contains previously uncollected short poems, while the second and third parts are the complete texts of The Desert Music (1954) and Journey to Love (1955),originally published by Random House. In these books, Dr. Williams perfected his "variable foot" metric and achieved full mastery of the "American idiom" which was his lifelong first concern. Among the poems of this period is the long "Asphodel, That Greeny Flower" which W. H. Auden has called "one of the most beautiful love poems in the language." Pictures from Brueghel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry only two months after William Carlos Williams' death on March 4, 1963.
