Me: The Boy And The Monster - A Tale of Bravery and Friendship
Once upon a time, in a small village nestled deep within a dense forest, lived a curious and imaginative young boy named Thomas. He had always been fascinated by stories of mythical creatures and longed for an adventure of his own.
One fateful day, as the sun began to set and the moon started to rise, Thomas set out on a daring quest, unaware of the life-changing encounter that awaited him.
Mysterious Encounter in the Woods
As Thomas ventured further into the heart of the forest, he could hear rustling leaves and distant whispers. His heart pounded with excitement, and he eagerly followed the sounds until he stumbled upon a hidden clearing.

There, he saw a peculiar creature - half-man, half-monster - standing tall and strong. The creature had towering antlers on his head and eyes that twinkled with a mix of wisdom and mischief.
"Who are you?" Thomas asked, his voice filled with curiosity and a hint of fear.
"I am Aegis, the guardian of these woods," the creature replied. "I have been waiting for someone like you."
A True Friendship is Formed
Over time, Thomas and Aegis formed an unlikely bond. They spent countless hours exploring the secrets of the forest, climbing tall trees, and swimming in serene lakes. Aegis shared ancient stories and taught Thomas about the importance of bravery and compassion.
As the days passed, Thomas couldn't help but notice how misunderstood Aegis was by the villagers. They feared his appearance, believing him to be a monster capable of great harm. Determined to change their perception, Thomas decided to introduce Aegis to the village.
Braving the Unknown
Accompanied by Aegis, Thomas marched into the village square. Whispers and gasps filled the air as the villagers caught a glimpse of the towering creature standing beside their beloved Thomas.
"Do not be afraid," Thomas proclaimed. "Aegis is my friend, a guardian of the forest - wise, gentle, and kind."
Gradually, the villagers began to see beyond Aegis' frightening appearance. They witnessed the unwavering friendship shared by the young boy and the misunderstood creature.
A Timeless Lesson
Through their friendship, Thomas and Aegis taught the village an invaluable lesson: that appearances can be deceiving and true friendship knows no boundaries.
The villagers learned to embrace Aegis as an integral part of their community. In turn, Aegis used his strength and wisdom to protect the village from any harm that could befall them.
A Lifelong Adventure
As the years went by, Thomas and Aegis continued their adventures together, leaving a lasting legacy within the village. They became known as the dynamic duo who reminded everyone of the power of acceptance and understanding.
And so, their tale lives on – a testament to the enduring bond forged between a brave young boy and a misunderstood monster. Me: The Boy And The Monster - a story of bravery, friendship, and the everlasting magic that can be found when we look beyond what meets the eye.

Me, the Boy, and The Monster is a personal, thoughtful, and touching tribute to a family’s journey through the world of adoption and trauma. McGill has a background in developmental psychology and uses this to great effect; the theory sections of MTBTM are relevant, researched, and related to real-life examples from McGill’s own experience with her adopted son. This book goes beyond the tired cliché of ‘attachment’ however, pulling together relevant strands of many different psychological theories and disciplines, all of which is juxtaposed against heart-wrenching and emotional accounts taken from McGill’s own blog, giving the reader a unique and personal insight in to the day to day struggles of her family.‘This isn’t just a book for people before they adopt; this is also a book for adopters. There were so many things you said that resonated so clearly with my experience. You articulate the concepts beautifully and the personal illustration from your life, so generously included, brings it to life and makes it real.’-- Adoptive parent‘I LOVE IT! It’s written in a really easy-to-understand way, without too much jargon, and the technical stuff is explained in a clear way.’-- Adoptive parent‘Your description of The Monster is a real insight into trauma and its effects on the children. I really gained an understanding and even recognised some traits in our 17-month-old. I appreciate the honesty you have included with your examples – letting the reader know what works/doesn’t work and that you have to change your approach as the child develops/heals.’-- Adoptive parent
