The Blues that Haunt Manchester: The Enigmatic Tale of Eric Sams
Manchester, often hailed as the birthplace of countless legendary musicians and a thriving cultural hub, has witnessed the rise of numerous musical genres throughout its storied history. From the pulsating beats of the Madchester era to the soulfulness of the Northern Soul movement, this industrial city has ingrained music deep into its very fabric. However, tucked away in the shadows of Manchester's vibrant music scene lies an enigmatic figure, Eric Sams, whose mysterious story and haunting blues melodies have echoed through the city for decades.
Eric Sams, a name that elicits curiosity and fascination among Manchester's music aficionados, is a man shrouded in mystery. Born on a cold winter night in 1950, Eric grew up in the outskirts of Manchester, disconnected from the glitz and glamour of the city's musical landscape. While his contemporary artists embraced rock and pop, Eric found solace in the melancholic embrace of blues music.
As a teenager, Eric Sams would often be found in the dimly lit pubs that peppered the weary streets of Manchester, his weathered guitar in hand and a soulful tune on his lips. With every stroke of the strings, Eric's blues melodies would resonate with the patrons, transporting them to a world of heartbreak, pain, and raw emotion. It was this ability to capture the essence of human suffering that earned Eric the moniker of "Manchester Evening Blues."

Unlike his contemporaries who craved mainstream success, Eric never sought recognition or commercial triumph. His motivations were pure; he played for the love of the blues and the solace it brought him. Manchester, a city known for embracing its musicians with open arms, reciprocated by adorning Eric's performances with an ethereal aura. Every time he took to the stage, it felt as if a collective hush fell upon the venue, as the audience eagerly awaited the cathartic release of his haunting melodies.
Word of Eric's unique talent spread like wildfire throughout the Manchester music scene, drawing comparisons to the legendary bluesmen of old. Fans and fellow musicians alike were captivated by the way Eric's every note resonated with the soul. There was a raw vulnerability in his music that spoke directly to the deepest recesses of one's being, leaving an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to witness his performances.
But as fame began to beckon, an inexplicable darkness began to seep into Eric's life. Described as a man haunted by his own demons, he became increasingly reclusive, shying away from the limelight that he had barely brushed against. Some whisper that it was the weight of his own genius that proved too heavy to bear, while others believe that an unrequited love pushed him into the shadows.
Eric Sams' retreat from the public eye only intensified the myth surrounding him. Legends of his whereabouts and occasional impromptu concerts in obscure corners of Manchester's labyrinthine streets began to circulate. Many claim to have glimpsed him, a lone figure strumming his guitar beneath the flickering streetlights, his music echoing through the dusk like a gentle breeze carrying tales of heartache.
The legacy of Eric Sams lives on throughout Manchester, with his name often whispered among musicians and enthusiasts discussing the city's rich musical history. His mysterious persona and haunting blues melodies continue to inspire new artists, keeping the spirit of the blues alive in the city that birthed it.

In January 2017, Norman Beaker became only one of eight 21-st century British artists to be officially recognised and inducted as a Legend in the American Heritage Society's Blues Hall of Fame®, alongside Jack Bruce, Peter Green, John Mayall, Jeff Beck, Keith Richards, Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton. Norman is one of those very first artists who with such iconic colleagues as Alexis Korner, Graham Bond helped to create the unique British Blues, R&B and Rock sound that captivated the world.
Norman kept its signature sound alive throughout his distinguished career, whether playing solo or with a Who's Who of blues, soul and rock from both sides of the Atlantic, including Chuck Berry, Jack Bruce, Van Morrison, Peter Green, Buddy Guy, Ruby Turner and B.B. King.
Though known primarily as a bluesman, Norman seamlessly moves among the genres of jazz, rock, pop and R&B with the grace and ease that characterise his performances and original songs.
There aren't many of these gifted first and finest who defined the British Blues genre. Of these rare national treasures who still remain, none serve the music more faithfully than Norman Beaker: guitar, voice and original songs are as fresh and powerful as when he first began in the Northern clubs.
This books tells the story of his rise from his home in Manchester to one of the most sought after Blues legends
