Agricola's breakthrough came when he was appointed as the governor of Britain in 77 AD. Arriving on the island, he was faced with numerous challenges, including rebellious tribes and a lack of infrastructure. However, it was in this position that Agricola truly showcased his visionary abilities as an architect of Roman society.
Building the Empire
Understanding the importance of a well-connected network of roads, Agricola initiated an ambitious construction project aimed at improving transportation across Britain. He constructed strategic roads such as the Fosse Way, linking important cities and fortresses, enabling efficient troop movements and facilitating trade. Agricola's road network not only strengthened the empire's hold on the island but also improved the lives of the local population, fostering economic growth and cultural exchange.
Realizing the need for strong defensive structures, Agricola oversaw the construction of a series of forts and fortresses strategically positioned throughout Britain. These architectural marvels served as symbols of Roman power and authority while providing the necessary protection for the Roman soldiers and the local population. The remnants of these structures can still be seen today, standing as a testament to Agricola's strategic genius.
Education and Cultural Advancement
Agricola understood the importance of education in shaping a prosperous society. To promote intellectual growth and cultural advancement, he established schools and libraries across Britain, ensuring that both Roman citizens and the locals had access to knowledge and learning. These institutions became centers of intellectual exchange and helped establish a sense of Roman identity within the British population.
Influence and Legacy
Agricola's innovative strategies and architectural achievements left an indelible mark on Roman Britain. Gnaeus Julius Agricola was a man fated for conquest and tied to the island of Britannia. He cut his teeth on military command during the revolt of Boudicca, later commanded a legion against the warlike Brigantes and was finally given the governorship of the province and was able to lead the armies north, incorporating into the empire the wild northern lands that had remained unclaimed for three decades. He broke the back of the Scottish tribes at Mons Graupius and achieved what no other Roman ever managed. Agricola had a settled Britannia in his hands, only to be removed and see it evaporate without him.
Agricola’s biography was written by his son-in-law Tacitus, and his life has otherwise never been examined in detail. Here, using the archaeological record and contemporary accounts to compare with Tacitus, we work to uncover the truth about the man who made Roman Britain. Was Tacitus an unreliable narrator?
